Local Rules

Rules of play at Druids Glen

Local rules take precedence over the scorecard if the two conflict. Tap a section to open it.

Simplified USGA rules summary

  1. Search for a lost ball for no more than 3 minutes.
  2. You may putt with the flagstick in. There is no penalty for hitting it.
  3. Drop from knee height.
  4. You may repair spike marks and other damage on the green.
  5. Bunker relief: you may drop back on a line outside the bunker for a 2-stroke penalty.
  6. No penalty for an accidental double hit.
  7. No penalty for accidentally moving your ball while searching for it. Replace it where it was.
  8. Embedded ball: free relief anywhere through the green, including the rough, but not in bunkers.
  9. No penalty for grounding your club or moving loose impediments in a Penalty Area.
  10. In bunkers, you may remove stones around and under your ball without penalty (2019 USGA Rules 12.2a and 12.2b).
  11. On the green, there is no penalty if you accidentally move your ball or ball-marker. Replace the ball if it had been marked, lifted and replaced; otherwise play it as it lies. Replace a moved marker on its original spot.

Local rules and Local Rule 1 areas

Unmarked wooded areas and long-grass areas may be played as a Red Penalty Area (Local Rule 1). Where a cart path runs alongside, the inner, course-side edge of the path is the line. See the hole-by-hole section below for each hole's Local Rule 1 areas.

Bunkers

  • Animal tracks: place your ball at the nearest point of relief in the bunker, no nearer the hole. Human footprints do not qualify.
  • Exposed bunker liner: free relief. Drop within one club-length of the nearest point of relief, no nearer the hole, or anywhere on a line from the flagstick back through your ball. Relief must stay in the bunker.

Preferred lies, drop areas and event play

  • Preferred lies (when in effect): lift, clean and place within 6 inches, no nearer the hole, without improving your lie. Allowed everywhere except Penalty Areas, bunkers, greens and within one club-length of a tree.
  • Drop areas are on holes 3, 10 and 16. The hole 16 drop area also covers shots into the woods.
  • No practice on the course on the day of a major event or on league days. Playing the course before a major event means disqualification.
  • Maximum score in major-event stroke play is 10 per hole (Optional Rule 21.2). Pick up at that point. For Wednesday league play the maximum is net double bogey.

Red Penalty Area relief (1-stroke penalty)

  1. Replay from where you hit your last shot.
  2. Drop behind the Penalty Area from knee height, keeping the point where your ball last crossed the edge directly between the hole and your drop spot. There is no limit to how far back you go.
  3. Drop outside the Penalty Area within two club-lengths of where your ball last crossed the edge, no nearer the hole.

Out of bounds and handicaps (Men's Club)

  • Hole 1: white stakes on the left bordering the driving range.
  • Hole 2: the road and everything left of it.
  • Hole 18: beyond the cart path, into the restaurant patio.
  • Out of bounds is stroke and distance: one penalty stroke and replay from your previous spot. If you think you may be out of bounds, announce and hit a provisional ball.
  • Handicaps: the Men's Club Handicap Committee may adjust a player's handicap index for Men's Club events, but only after speaking with that player.

Hole by hole: front nine

  • 1: Woods left of the fairway, past the range and around the back of the green. The driving range is out of bounds.
  • 2: The road edge on the fairway side is out of bounds. The rock pile left of the cart path is an abnormal ground condition: free relief within one club-length of the nearest point of relief, no nearer the hole.
  • 3: Woods and brush right of the cart path. Shots into the pond: 1-stroke penalty, then use the drop area right of the yellow tees or re-tee.
  • 4: Tall grass along or over the pond and into the woods, woods left of the fairway around the green, and tall grass right of the fairway past the 150-yard marker.
  • 5: Tall grass in front of and left of the tees, between the 4th fairway and the pond, left of the cart path into the woods (not out of bounds), and right of and short of the green.
  • 6: Tall grass left of and in front of the tees (watch for shots that roll back to the tee box), woods left of the fairway, and right of the cart path into tall grass.
  • 7: Woods left of the cart path around the back of the green, and tall grass right of the fairway near the green. For pond shots, note where the ball crossed the Penalty Area line, which may be near the tee.
  • 8: Tall grass right of the tee for about 100 yards, left of the cart path, and behind the green.
  • 9: Tall grass in front of the tees (you may drop back on the tee box), woods left of the cart path, tall grass past the woods up to the green, and tall grass right of the fairway up to the pond.

Hole by hole: back nine

  • 10: Tall grass near the green left of the cart path and past the pond right of the green. If your tee shot does not clear the pond, use the drop area (1-stroke penalty). Shots that fly over playable ground and land in the right-side pond follow Penalty Area rules.
  • 11: Woods right of the fairway (you may drop left of the cart path until the path crosses the fairway), tall grass left of and in front of the tees, and tall grass left of the fairway through the green.
  • 12: Shots right or long go into the woods. The pond left of the green is a Red Penalty Area with no drop area. A shot into the woods left of the cart path must be replayed from the same spot.
  • 13: Woods right of the fairway, tall grass left of the cart path, and woods long and left of the green. The ponds in front of the tee are Penalty Areas, usually replayed with a penalty (or drop within 2 club-lengths of the pond edge). A ball in the dry retention pond is played as it lies.
  • 14: Woods right of the cart path the length of the hole (you may drop left of the path), and woods along the entire left side of the fairway.
  • 15: Woods left of the fairway, and woods right of the cart path the length of the hole (you may drop left of the path).
  • 16: Shots into the pond or the woods right of the cart path: 1-stroke penalty, then use the drop area right of the yellow tees or re-tee. The area short of the pond is included.
  • 17: Woods right of the fairway (you may drop left of the cart path), tall grass left of the fairway between 17 and 11, woods left over roughly the last 50 yards to the green, and woods behind the green.
  • 18: Woods right of the cart path (you may drop left of the path), tall grass left between the 18th and 10th fairways, and tall grass right of the cart path between the 18th and 9th fairways. Out of bounds is on and beyond the cart path behind the green.
